Smith's journey to the NBA began on the playgrounds of Harlem, where he honed his skills against some of the best competition in the world. He was a standout player at Rice High School, leading the Raiders to two city championships. Smith then went on to play college basketball at St. John's University, where he was a two-time All-American and the 1991 Big East Player of the Year.
Smith was selected first overall by the New York Knicks in the 1991 NBA Draft. He quickly became a fan favorite in the Big Apple, averaging 17.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in his rookie season. Smith helped the Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1994, but they lost to the Houston Rockets in seven games.
Smith spent the next few seasons with the Knicks, but he never quite reached the same heights as he did in his rookie year. He was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in 1998, and he helped the team reach the NBA Finals in 1996. Smith played for the Sonics for three seasons before he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1999.
Smith spent the final four seasons of his career with the 76ers, and he helped them reach the NBA Finals in 2001. He retired from the NBA in 2003, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
Smith is one of the most decorated players in NBA history. He was a two-time All-Star, a two-time All-NBA Second Team selection, and a one-time NBA rebounding champion. He also led the league in field goal percentage twice.
Smith is a true basketball legend. He was a dominant force in the paint, and he was one of the most athletic players of his generation. He is a member of the Hoop Kings New Royalty, and he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.
