Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York, in 1924. His father was a minister, and his mother was a schoolteacher. Baldwin's family was poor, and he grew up in a segregated neighborhood. From an early age, Baldwin experienced the racism and discrimination that were pervasive in American society.

He also published several collections of essays, including Notes of a Native Son (1955),Nobody Knows My Name (1961),and The Fire Next Time (1963).
