Gamal Abdel Nasser, the charismatic and enigmatic leader of Egypt from 1954 to 1970, was a towering figure in the history of the Arab world and the Muslim world. During the Second World War, Nasser served in the Western Desert against the Axis forces. He was captured by the British in 1942 and spent three years as a prisoner of war. After the war, Nasser returned to Egypt and joined the Free Officers Movement, a group of young army officers who were determined to overthrow the monarchy and establish a republic.
