Early life and education

Carson was born in Springdale, Pennsylvania, in 1907. She developed a love of nature at a young age, spending much of her childhood exploring the woods and fields near her home. She attended Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) and earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1929. After graduating from college, Carson worked as a teacher and a research assistant at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts.

Writing career

Carson began her writing career in the 1930s, publishing articles in popular magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Magazine. Her first book, Under the Sea-Wind, was published in 1941. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Carson as a leading nature writer.

In 1951, Carson published her masterpiece, The Sea Around Us. The book was a lyrical and informative account of the ocean's inhabitants and ecosystems. The Sea Around Us was a huge success, selling over a million copies and winning the National Book Award.

Silent Spring

Carson's most famous book, Silent Spring, was published in 1962. The book documented the harmful effects of pesticides on the environment and human health. Silent Spring was a groundbreaking book that helped to raise awareness of the dangers of pesticides and other chemicals. The book also helped to launch the modern environmental movement.

Later life and legacy

Carson continued to write books and articles about the environment until her death in 1964. Her work helped to shape the environmental movement and to inspire future generations of environmentalists. Carson is considered one of the most important environmentalists of the 20th century, and her work continues to be read and studied today.
